Although not necessary to worry about immediately, your paperwork is probably THE most important step on preparing for your wedding in Greece.

There are three steps to making sure you have the right paperwork…marriage_license_400

Foreign nationals  wishing to marry in Kefalonia may do so, provided that they allow sufficient time for the local authorities to receive and process their application with the necessary documentation in order for them to issue the marriage license.

My Greek Wedding will require your documents to be sent to us by courier or registered mail, no later than one month before the wedding date.

The documents required by both persons who intend to marry are the following:
- Full birth certificate (with parents’ names)
- Certificate of No Impediment to marriage - this certificate can be obtained from your local Registry Office. This document must not be issued more than three (3) months before the desired date of the wedding. It takes approximately a month to be issued by the Registrar.
- Decree absolute, if there has been a divorce.
- Deed Poll, if name has been changed.

- Death certificates if either is a widow/widower

First Step

All documents, in English, must be officially certified (legalised) by the British Foreign & Commonwealth Office with an Apostille Seal from the Legalisation Department.

The FCO Legalisation Office Web Site could be found by clicking on their website here.

The second step is to translate all the above documents into Greek. My Greek Wedding planners will advise you of a translator that we have been working very successfully with in the past, and who can also certify the translations.

All the above documents, along with photocopies of both 10 year valid passports should be sent by courier or registered mail to us at least one month before the wedding date.

For civil weddings, it is required that two witnesses be present. In case that the groom and the bride are traveling on their own, our staff will be happy to offer assistance and act as witnesses at the wedding ceremony.
